CHICAGO (WLS) -- Students and staff on Monday afternoon honored the life of a Chicago teenager shot and killed days after his high school graduation.

DeAngelo Miles was killed last Sunday morning, while on his way home from an after-prom party.

The 17-year-old was captain of the Hansberry College Prep football team.

The shooting happened around 3:08 a.m. in the 11900-block of South Wallace Street in West Pullman, Chicago police said.

Miles was found shot in the head; he later died. A motive for the shooting is unclear.

Miles wanted to join the Navy after graduating high school.

He also had a summer job with the Chicago Park District.

His family said police told them it may have been a robbery that took a deadly turn.

Some Hansberry College Prep students still have class through next week. And many of those students are having a hard time with his death.

"We didn't expect this to happen. It hurts us. I'm deeply hurt," teammate Ahmon Jordan said.

His classmates and teachers wanted to get together to grieve as a community Monday. Many of the staff are also devastated at the news.

"My heart just sank. I had no words, very difficult. The only reason I was able to show up was the other kids," advisor Hannah Specht said.

The other kids are trying to deal with the loss by remembering what a special person Miles was to them.

"Sophomore year he would check on me, and he wouldn't let nobody mess with me. He was like my brother," teammate Terraiya Rofs said.

The football team has dedicated next season to Miles.

"Full of laughter, full of joy, kid was just phenomenal," football coach Derrick Moore said.

No one is in custody; Chicago police continue to investigate.
